Admiralty Island - Alaska

Admiralty Island Alaska

Admiralty Island is the seventh largest island in the United States. Admiralty Island is part of the Alexander Archipelago and is situated in Southeast Alaska, approximately 15 miles from Juneau.

Much of Admiralty Island National Monument is a designated wilderness and is home to the Tlingit Indians.

Admiralty Island is also known by the name of Kootznoowoo which translated means the fortress of bears. This is not surprising as around 1600 brown bears inhabit the island. In fact, there are more bears than humans.

Other wildlife of Admiralty Island includes seals, porpoises, sea lions, hump back whales, Sitka black tailed deer and eagles.

Admiralty Island is extremely mountainous with some reaching the height of 4650ft. Some of these are covered with tundra and permanent ice fields.

There are plenty of activities to do on Admiralty Island. These include kayaking and bear watching. The US Forest Service has several cabins for public use.
